More About the Project

As shipping and industrial activity increase in the Arctic, so does the risk of oil contamination. Reyd is studying how these pollutants impact the animals that call the waters of the Arctic home, including various seabirds as well as marine mammals like the walrus. Her work provides essential insights into environmental risk and resilience in the Arctic, hopefully guiding future conservation policies that will protect walruses and other incredible marine life.

About Walruses

The walrus is a large marine mammal known for its long tusks, whiskery face, and floppy flippers. It lives in the chilly oceans of the north, where it hauls out onto ice or rocky shores to rest between swims. Walruses are super social and love to lounge in big, noisy groups, often grunting, bellowing, and snorting to talk to each other. They even use their tusks to help climb onto ice and show who's boss!
