Young researcher Cat Goltz leads a field crew southeast of Saskatoon, in the heart of the Prairie Pothole Region. They’re one of several groups working on this prairie-wide study, with sites spread across the region to ensure that results are representative of the full scope of conditions across the varied landscape. Their research helps improve decision-making and maximizes conservation outcomes by informing practical and applied conservation solutions, all with the goal of maintaining a balance between healthy wetland habitats and productive agricultural landscapes within this critical ecosystem.

About Mallards

Mallards are one of the most familiar ducks in North America, known for their shiny green heads, quacking calls, and playful splashes in wetland waters. These birds are expert dabblers, flipping bottoms-up to munch on plants and insects below the surface. Mallards live in wetlands, which are super important ecosystems that help keep our water clean, prevent floods, and store carbon.
