How funding will help

Beluga whale adoptions support Patrick White, a PhD candidate at Dalhousie University. Patrick studies phytoplankton—tiny organisms that form the base of the Arctic food web and are crucial to the health of the marine ecosystem—all the way up to top predators like beluga whales. Funding will be used to upgrade the equipment used to analyze these microscopic organisms, so Patrick can better track population shifts in a changing climate.

More About the Project

Patrick conducts his fieldwork in Jones Sound, Nunavut, where he collects and analyzes data on phytoplankton to understand how they adapt to a changing climate. Since phytoplankton support the entire Arctic marine food chain, this research is key to predicting how species like the beluga whale may be affected by ongoing environmental shifts—and how we can protect them.

About Belugas

The beluga whale is known as the “canary of the sea” because it makes all kinds of amazing sounds, from clicks and whistles to playful squeaks and chirps. These majestic mammals live in the icy waters of the Arctic and are easy to spot thanks to their bright white color and friendly faces.
