How funding will help

Arctic fox adoptions support the work of Emmanuelle Gouin, a master’s student at Université du Québec à Rimouski. Her research focuses on the reproductive success of snow buntings—an Arctic fox prey species—impacted by rising Arctic temperatures. Their populations have dropped drastically in the last 45 years, and understanding why is important to ensuring the success of this species and the Arctic fox that rely on them.

More About the Project

Working at the northern tip of Ellesmere Island, Emmanuelle is investigating how warmer temperatures may cause snow buntings to overheat, reducing their ability to feed and care for their chicks and thus resulting in decreasing populations. Her findings will support future conservation efforts aimed at protecting these vulnerable Arctic species and the fragile tundra ecosystem they’re a critical part of.

About Arctic Foxes

The Arctic fox is a small, clever creature built for life in one of the coldest places on Earth: the Arctic tundra. Their thick fur changes color with the seasons to help them hide from predators, going from a bright white in the winter (to blend in with snow), to a brown or gray in the summer (to match rocks and plants). Their fluffy tails act like blankets when they curl up to sleep, and their furry paws help them walk on snow and ice.
